Temple Grandin may be the most famous person with Autism, a condition that affects 1 in 88 children. Since her birth in 1947, our understanding of it has undergone a great transformation, leading to more hope than ever before that we may finally learn the causes of and treatments for autism.

Weaving her own experience with remarkable new discoveries, Grandin introduces the advances in neuroimaging and genetic research that link brain science to behavior, even sharing her own brain scan to show which anomalies might explain common symptoms. Most excitingly, she argues that raising and educating kids on the autism spectrum must focus on their long-overlooked strengths to foster their unique contributions. The Autistic Brain brings Grandin’s singular perspective into the heart of the autism revolution.

Here you will see in this section, resources  intended for, but not limited to: first responders, board certified behavior analysts, psychologists, doctors, therapists and parents. The types of resources include: first responder guides, tools, awareness training guides, books and more

Behavioral Health Center of Excellence® (BHCOE)

Behavioral Health Center of Excellence® (BHCOE®) is an international accrediting body created to meet accreditation needs specific to the delivery of behavior analysis.

The BHCOE’s accreditation requirements undergo regular review according to international standards for organizations that grant accreditation.

All BHCOE requirements and survey content are reviewed annually by content experts. BHCOE Accreditation ® is a certification given to an applied behavior analysis provider once it has demonstrated it has met and continues to meet an assortment of clinical and administrative standards as determined by an independent third-party evaluator.

The concept of accrediting Applied Behavior Analysis organizations began in 2009 when a large ABA organization became insolvent and left hundreds of families without services.

As a response to this insolvency, a transparency committee was formed by the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) and began identifying quality measures for ABA providers through the California Regional Centers.

A five-year pilot project occurred between 2009-2014 to provide the state with additional information about quality assurance metrics for behavioral organizations.

Subsequently, a group of behavior analysts originally involved in the DDS Pilot Project came together in August 2015 to formalize the BHCOE as an international accrediting body and began globally discussing and shaping the Quality Assurance Standards and BHCOE Accreditation Program.

Paradigm Behavior

My curiosity for Autism came about when I taught martial arts.

I remember the frustration I felt when a student politely raised his hand and said “Ms. Christina, I’m tired. No, no, no!” and promptly lay down in the middle of the group while we were practicing roundhouse kicks.

As marital arts is known for its discipline, I punished the student with endurance drills, and when the student refused, I sat him out of class that day.

Minutes later his mom politely explained her son had Autism and asked me if I could allow him to rejoin!

Needless to say, I felt awful.   I quickly modified my instructions for the student so he could participate with the group.

Soon after that session, I found a part-time nanny position for a child with Autism that essentially introduced me to applied behavior analysis (ABA), and then ultimately became a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA).

I’m not going to lie. Learning ABA was very overwhelming for me.

The language and concepts are so precise that it probably took me a couple of years of doing direct therapy, supervision, workshops and lots of online searches on ABA before it “clicked” and I was able to see the “big picture” (probably a glimmer, but it was an AHA! moment).

I was able to connect how these programs contributed to client’s short term and long term growth.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to experience both in home and clinical therapy, as well as offering consultative services through the Medicaid waiver program.

Through these, I’ve had the privilege to meet some great people, and, even more rewarding, offer families who are dealing with the daily struggle, a helping hand.

It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience, but I know there’s so much more I can do to help.

That’s why I started Paradigm Behavior.

I understand the need for parents to be able to naturally integrate concepts of ABA into their lifestyle.

My goal is to create a comfortable space for parents and therapists to utilize resources that are not overwhelming and effective.

I enjoy Paradigm Behavior as a platform to stay curious and stay creative in this field.

On my website you’ll find a mix of free and paid resources that are readily available for you to pick up and use today.

Lily & Magnolia Travel

Planning vacations of any kind involves a lot of research. After all, your goal is to go on a vacation your whole family will love! However, the hours upon hours of emails, phone calls, and looking up just one more thing is enough to make you want to skip the vacation planning period!

I hear you!

When my oldest son was diagnosed with autism, I thought our days of travel were long gone! I didn’t know how he would react in new places or the sensory overload. But all that changed one day when my son came home and asked me to plan a trip to the National Mall in Washington DC. I knew that I couldn’t keep putting off vacations because I thought they were too difficult to plan and meet his needs at the same time.  At the time, I didn’t know that autism-friendly vacations were a thing.

After I became a travel advisor in 2018 I went on the search to see if there was anything out there that could support my son during our vacations.  I found and studied to become a Certified Autism Travel Professional. This helped me learn how to modify our vacations and make them autism-friendly. Of course, it also helped me fulfill a passion of mine, which is helping parents of children with autism learn how they too can travel the world via a little autistic-globetrotting.

Since I founded Lily and Magnolia Travel in 2018, I have cultivated relationships with tourism suppliers that have programs and accommodations for those with autism. I am happy to say that that list is growing every year!

My goal is to remove the stress of autism-friendly vacation planning for you. This means you can vacation with confidence knowing I’ve taken care of all the more difficult components and you can simply pack your bags and be on your way!

I will begin by listening to what you want for a family vacation. I will then use that information to create an autism-friendly vacation package that will make every member of your family happy! Your vacation will include autism-friendly airlines or autism-friendly cruise lines, as well as autism-friendly hotels or resorts, and autism-friendly activities.     Are you curious to see how I can help you? Contact me today and let’s chat about your travel dreams!
