Waiting is a
foundational skill for taking turns, independent play, and for building empathy. Being able to wait gives a child the chance to
make better choices, to consider consequences, and to improve their focus on their environment and on others’ needs.
Brain science has determined that the self-control required for waiting begins to develop in a young child’s brain sometime in
between the ages of 3 ½ and 4 years old. Typically, it takes another 25 years for it to develop fully.
