A Oceanic THAAD anti-air system fires during exercises
A Thyven Soldier during the White Straight Blockade
The United States of Oceanice stated late last month that if Thyven didn't withdraw it's ships from the White Straight or begin negotiations with the EDU, they would strike the nation with nuclear weapons. While the conflict in the White Straight has been escalating between Thyven and Oceanice in recent weeks, the threat marks the peak of military aggression in the conflict. While both sides received condemnations from the Empire of Vespurias, the THEP aligned empire mobilized to protect it's national borders, only blocking foreign military cargo ships and warships from it's half of the white straight.
Vespurias also called for de-escalation, something which happened, but not how the nation hoped. Thyven, practically overnight, collapsed into civil upheaval. The military announced a full withdraw from the White Straight, as well as recalling all forces across the world. As the government struggled to handle internal conflict, the Bank of Gossen froze withdrawals and laid off clerks, attempting to prevent a potential bank run. As the month ended, Red October gave way to Gray Friday.
The nation's markets would plumet almost 200 points on October 2nd, and other issues further deepened. The depbt to GDP ration would reach an astonishing 57% before the state issued a nationwide cap on interest of 2%, the lowest seen in Thyven's history. The two sides recently agreed to peace talks sponsered by Ekapantus and Vespurias, hopefully bringing an end to this conflict and giving Thyven time to recover.
Recently, the Elseyran Defense Union (EDU) accepted Daesun as an associate member into the Union, expanding the earlier agreement the nation had with the Neue Republik. The acceptance has given Daesun preferred terms in the EDU such as lowered tariffs and has even allowed Daesun to access the union's emergency fund, giving the large nation something to lean on in the case it is hit with a crisis. These are all relatively good pieces of news for the nation, the real attention of Lavia has been put on the other parts of the agreement.
Lavia recently signed a trade and exchange deal with Daesun, allowing them to purchase and sell multiple things to us. Chief among these are proprietary nuclear energy and research technologies, weapons, armored vehicles, military aircraft, shipbuilding techniques, and very importantly, plutonium. The Kianzhoun nation becoming an associate member with the EDU also include Daesun in joint projects such as nuclear energy research as well as integrating Daesun's military further towards the EDU standard. Not only does this potentially expose critical Lavian technologies planned to be sent to Daesun to the prying eyes of the EDU, an alliance which seems to see itself more and more as the international police, challenging our THEP allies while at it, as well as supporting the oppressive Tallislandic government contrary to their own stated mission.
As of recent, many experts who have already been sent to Daesun have been ordered to stop working, and important technologies which were bound for the nation now sit idle in port, waiting for a decision to be made. The Lavian government has sent an official complaint to the Daesunite government, requesting a rewrite to the recent trade deal which would involve the Directorate of International Intelligence (DII) overlooking all usage, transportation, storage and study of proprietary technologies deemed critical to Lavian security, as well as guarantees that Daesun would not share any information about the technologies, military arms and vehicles agreed bought under the agreement with the EDU, and they will not provide the union any nuclear material purchased from Lavia in any way. While consumer goods and resources remain in trade, the holding of experts and tech from Daesun holds them to either agree to the wanted rewrite or loose anticipated critical technologies and may further lose entire parts of the deal.
Finally, Daesun's military bases across the ULR will be bared from access to all EDU troops and vehicles, announced by the Military Command of the Republic. Not posing an immediate issue, this can become a hot piece of contention as Daesun integrates further with the EDU, requiring the nation to station potentially older equipment on such bases to comply with such requirements as they replace their vehicles and weaponry to comply with the union's own military requirements. Daesun has shown they are willing to work with Lavia, but the nation waits to see if they will accept Lavia's demands, or look to the EDU to fill the withheld technologies.
Relations has soured recently after the USO threatened to use nuclear weapons in the White Straight, in support of EDU interests. Hopes were high for mending relations after President Achebe met President Willham in New Rorack, the first since Oceanice became a democracy. While the Argos Cold War seems to be the coldest it has ever been, the recent threat may have flared it up once again.
Even though the EDU-aligned United States of Oceanice and the more THEP-aligned United Lavian Republic had a good start with relations, the Lavian government and isn't taking the threat lightly. "This is abhorrent behavior, mirroring the actions of a madman who only knows to lash out when something gets in their way," says Joshua Volakspan, a correspondent for the Harrison International Political Institute, adding "We can only hope they will get their temperament under control before they give the EDU an even worse name on the world stage"
In recent months, the THEP and EDU tension has been very noticeable. Tallisland, the White Straight, and Valddera have all been between the THEP and EDU trying to one-up each other by intervening in almost any civil conflict that sparks up, and even directly opposing each other via blockades like the White Straight and furthermore by tariffs and sanctions on members of the rival alliance. Is this what us Lavians really want? To pick a side in the expanding feud of two large military alliances?
So, what would the solution to this be? I wholeheartedly believe that expanding the EEHP would be the best measure. Reaching out to the IOC and others in the would would help cement the ULR not as a simple friend of THEP, but a truly neutral state in this conflict, bringing nations together in the EEHP rather than helping the world tear itself apart like the EDU or THEP.

Recently, the Second Republic made a multitude of purchases to reinvigorate their military in the face of the White Straight Crisis, as well as resupply after multiple aircraft donations to their "sister republic" of Nevonla. Their deals with Lavia come after the First tribune of the Second Republic, Klos Reuter, met in a private conference with unidentified Lavian officials, possibly being part of ongoing negotiations and starting relations off on the right foot. Currently the imports are limited to armored vehicles and aircraft, leaving possibility for additional small arms purchases, similar to the imports their last monarch acquired.
The deals include the purchase of 60 aircraft, 550 armored personnel carriers, 300 IFVs, and 20 tanks. While most of the vehicles in these numbers are modernized versions of retired equipment, there are decent chunks of equipment currently employed by the Lavian military being sent as well.
The recent situation in Thyven has put their investor confidence at an almost all-time low, with government and private sources trying their best to keep investors assured that they will pull through this crisis. While this does work for some, it has turned others away from further investment, looking for more stable nations to invest in, the ULR being one of them.
While Lavia is a THEP partner, they retain quite a lot of independence from most THEP actions and decisions, while also establishing somewhat turbulent relations with the EDU associates of the USO and Daesun, signaling that they are willing to work with both sides while also making them much more stable in the ever polarized world stage.

The new premier film "Desert Berets of Blue" promotes itself as an action-thriller and anti-war movie in a single package, exploring Lavia's involvement in the 1953-1958 Sabratan Civil War. The main character, Hank McCormac, is a military pilot, and after his aircraft is strafed by Revolutionary fighter-planes, he bails out and is discovered by members of the AAT-S-SIG (Aerial Assistance Troops, Shamat Studies and Intelligence Group) during the 1956 Siege of Stikada. A tale of desperation, war, and barrowed time, the film is a must see, receiving 4.8 overall stars from critics.
The new rising musical star from Oceanice, Luma vex, has announced recently she will be performing on tour in the United Lavian Republic on the islands of Virginia, Manzaro and Makinar. The appearance is highly anticipated however, with her recent single reaching pop charts across the Llyndorran speaking world and reaching a top ten place in trending pop songs in the ULR and Oceanice.
Eyad Ashour, a Durani Politician , will be the first Sabratan in Lavian history to be considered for Vice-Presidency.
