The Unitarian Congregation of Pernambuco is a liberal congregational Christian church whose values include liberal theology, just peace, the inclusion of all people, and a strong liturgical tradition.
With a history that began in 1933, CUP gathers families and individuals from different parts of the state of Pernambuco, as well as from neighboring states. Our congregation is a diverse bilingual community (English and Portuguese) which offers many exciting educational programs for the youth and adults, pastoral care, and many opportunities for spiritual enrichment and a liturgical life that challenges the mind and touches the soul.
As a Christian church, we find our way to God in the teachings attributed to Jesus Christ while respecting the quest and the insights of other religious traditions in opening up dialogue and mutual enrichment in our pluralistic world. Together with the Independent Christian Church of Recife, we keep an alliance of Christian communion, sharing our Ministers and our community life.
As Unitarians, we affirm a specific Christian tradition which does not require us to embrace a list of beliefs (a creed) in order to be members of the same congregation. For us, the essence of being a 'church' is to be a community - a unity of spirit between each member, and a unity of spirit among the people of the church and God. We do not promise to believe, we promise to seek. We do not value the church because of the answers the church offers, we value it for being a place where we can ask together. Our deepest joy comes from the support we give each other on the journey.
Our community welcomes absolutely everyone. We embrace diversity in our congregation and our community, and affirm the dignity and worth of all persons created in God's image. We honor the principle that discrimination is incompatible with Jesus' message of unconditional love. We welcome as full members and as part of the life of our congregation people of all ethnic and socio-economic groups, of all emotional-sexual orientations and of all gender identities; no matter who you are, no matter what you've done, no matter what has happened to you, no matter where you are on life's journey, no matter where you've been: YOU ARE WELCOME AMONG US!!!
