Research Employees: We can collaborate with you as a research employee of Geological Survey of Japan, AIST (or other departments of AIST). Though AIST hires more than 100 research employees (excluding postdocs, technical staff, etc.) every year, positions for seismologists are infrequently open. See our job opportunities here.
AIST Postdoctoral Researchers: We sometimes offer AIST postdoctral researcher positions for participating research projects. Recently, we hire postdocs for the MEXT STAR-E project (TU as PI) and the JSPS KAKENHI "Sciences for Slow-to-Fast Earthquake" (TU as co-PI). See our job opportunities for AIST postdoctral researchres here (written in Japanese).
Postdoc Fellowship: I can host Postdoctral fellows supported by funding agencies such as JSPS. I have hosted one JSPS postdoc before. See the details on the JSPS postdoc fellowship here (for citizens or permanent residents of Japan) or here (for others).
AIST can host graduate students who can perform research at AIST under the approval of advisors at universities. Note that AIST is not a university, and AIST does not award any academic degrees. Please feel free to ask questions.
AIST Research Assistants: AIST can hire graduate students as Research Assistants (RA) who join the research activities of AIST. RAs can write their dissertations and journal papers based on the results of research at AIST. See the details here.
Technical Training: AIST can host graduate students who will learn our technology and knowledge. Trainees can write their dissertations and journal papers based on the results of research at AIST.
I have accepted 5 postdoctoral fellows, 1 Research Assistant, and 3 Technical Trainees so far. I strive to respect the individuality of postdoctoral fellows and students and make research enjoyable for them. Depending on the content and duration of the research, I aim to provide guidance that helps individuals’ efforts, ingenuity, and new challenges rather than giving detailed instructions. I select research themes by having repeated discussions with the individuals and considering their wishes and characteristics. For those who are employed in projects, we encourage them to use “Voluntary Research Activities of Young Researchers” (determined by Japan's Cabinet Office) to advance their research as much as possible. I also take various measures to help them become personnel who can play an active role internationally.
Joint research with researchers from universities and public research institutes can take various forms, such as collaborating on research projects or working together on small-scale research. We can work with companies in the form of Technical Training, Technology Consulting, and Collaborative Research. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
