[Studio Session 1]
In this first session, I was playing the drums, and Billy was playing the bass up until about 15 minutes before the end of this session, when Vinny came in and we recorded a sample of our original piece. Lacey and Madi were both in the control room sorting out all of the outputs and controlling the volume of what as coming out of our headphones.
Me and Billy spent the first sort of 15 to 20 minutes setting up the microphones for the drum kit. We plugged in the AKG D112 condenser microphone into input 1 at the Loom. I placed the microphone inside of the kick drum with the head of the microphone just at a slight angle to the beater of the pedal. The next thing we did was set up the 2 AKG C1000s overhead condenser microphones. I had set on of these up on a mic stand angled towards the right side of the rim.. I then used a cable to measure the distance between the microphone and the snare rim, and kept it that length and set up the next microphone that distance away from the same position on the kit. I then used the Shure SM57 to mic up the snare. I decided to mic up the high hat and the toms. For the high hat I had used the Shure SM57, placing it about 2cm above the tom cymbal of the high hat while it was open. With the toms, I had used the Sennheiser e604s, attaching them to the rims of the drum, making sure that the centre of the windscreen was pointing just ever so slightly below the middle of each tom.
[Inputs for this session]
In this session, the inputs were:
Kick Drum
Snare
Overhead Left
Overhead Right
High Tom
Middle Tom
Floor Tom
High Hat
[Studio Session 2]
In this session, I was not there for the majority of it, I managed to get the drum kit set up with all of the mics. Due to other personal reasons, I had to excuse myself from the session, after spending around 20 minutes setting up the drums just to not use them. I did not know how long I would have to leave this session so I had told them to wait for me and to leave the drums set up, but due to me not coming back I had let them down and, to my knowledge, they had not managed to get anything done for the first half of this session.
The inputs and microphones used for the drum kit are as followed:
Kick drum using the AKG D112 in Input 1.
Snare drum using the Shure SM57 in Input 2
Overhead Left using the AKG C1000
Overhead Right using the AKG C1000
High Tom using the Sennheiser e604
Middle Tom using the Sennheiser e604
Floor Tom using the Sennheiser e604
High Hat using the Shure SM57
[Studio Session 3]
In this session, Lacey wasn't able to get in for it and I had arrived 30 minutes late due to missing my train, but Vinny and Joe had been kind enough to mic up the drum kit. We had some technical issues with some of the microphones, and we had managed to sort it out and get started with recording the drums for our second song called Medusa. With doing this I had found it difficult to record with the guitar that had been recorded in the session before where I was not able to attend. After a lot of trial and error in recording the drums or a we took a 15 minute break, we came back and had a look at how to solve this issue. In finding a solution to this problem, as a group, we found it easier to record the rhythm guitar and the drums at the same time, this way I could ensure that I stayed in time with the beat. After doing this, we had ran intro the problem that the studios that had been book for the hour, were in fact not booked for us and we were given around 5 to 10 minutes to finish up what we were doing. We got to record the lead guitar for the song and had to pack up and give over the studio to the production studios.
For our sessions, these are you inputs:
Kick drum, using the AKG D112
Snare drum, using the Shure SM57
Overhead Left, using the Rode M5
Overhead Right. using the Rode M5
High Tom, using the Sennheiser e604
Middle Tom, using the Sennheiser e604
Floor Tom, using the Sennheiser e604
High Hat, using the Shure SM57
Rhythm guitar, using the Shure SM58
Lead Guitar, using the Shure SM58
[Studio Session 4]
In this session, we did not manage to get anything done apart from record the lead guitar. We started noticed that the rhythm guitar had some bleed from the drums. Because we heard the drums through the rhythm guitar, we decided to re-record the rhythm guitar, we also did this because there were some parts in the rhythm guitar that we found to be wrong. When recording the rhythm guitar, we realised that we were recording the lead guitar without a metronome. When we went to turn the metronome back on to record the rhythm guitar, we realised that something had happened to our file and the every track was now out of time with the tempo, but the tempo was the same as it was in the previous session.
In our next session, we are going to arrive early and restart everything we have done from scratch. This is a major set back but I think that my group can push through this and get it all done next session because of all the practise we have had over the past sessions.
[Studio Session 5]
In this session, we set up the microphones on the drum kit and the bass. I set up the wires in the loom in the control room whilst Joe and Vinny set up most of the microphones. We managed to get around 10 recordings of the drums and bass at the same time but something was wrong with how the bass sounded so we are going to fix that in the future.
In this session, we discussed final plans and adjustments that we wish to try in future sessions.
[Studio Session 6]
In this session, we were not in the studios, instead we re-recorded the bass and recorded the vocals in via Logic in F01. We set up the bass and Vinny did a few takes to make sure that everything was perfect and that everything was in time. Then we did the same with the vocals using, we set up the Audio Technical AT3525 for Lacey to use, making sure that it was a comfortable height for her to use, and just recorded the bass with the Shure SM57.
We plan to finish up any touches we find could be useful in our next session. Then the last thing to do is go onto logic and adjust volumes so that nothing is overpowering anything else more than it needs to.
[Mixing Final Recording]
With mixing my final recording I opened it up onto Logic and started off by putting all of the faders to -∞ and left the Stereo Out at 0dB. After this I had put the vocals in the mix to -6dB because it is the most important and worked everything else around this.
Starting with my overheads, I have panned the left overhead far to left and my right overhead
