What approaches are idiomatic of that time,
how did they develop?
[Drum Machines]
The 1980s was a massive decade in terms of the drum machine. The 80s saw the release of the Roland TR-808 and the Linn LM-1. These machine took a whole new approach to the sound of electronic drums. The Roland TR-808 is the more well know drum machine, its considered a classic. It is as well known today as it was in the 80s. This machine is the central control panel for that unique hip-hop and trap kind of music.
Drum Machines are used in production to give producers and one-man bands the ability to produce music without the need of a drummer or knowledge of how to play the drums. They allowed the artist to digitally input drums into their music with little effort. Drum machines are a modern machine that can electrically produce the sound of drums by changing the frequency and where the amplitude sits on the soundwaves. This creates all the different sections of the drums; toms, hi-hat, cymbals, the snare, the kick, the ride and bell, all of it.
The effect of the drum machine was to make every beat perfect and to make every beat in time. It was used massively for Disco music, acting as the foundation for the rise of EDM (Electronical Dance Music). Using drum machines allowed the artists and producers to freely sequence different drum patterns to a certain way to be able to assemble a complete, rhythmic and catchy song. This is also known as sequencing.
[Hooks]
Hooks are any section of the song that stands out and sounds more appealing to the listeners. They are commonly mistaken with short riffs or phrases. They are greatly used used in popular songs, most popular in genres such as Rock 'N' Roll, Pop, and R&B (Rhythm and Blues). They use to this make the song more attractive to the listener and catchy, making the listeners happier. The stronger the hook, usually a section of music that is really memorable and have a unique opening line.
The use of hooks developed in the 80's by becoming longer in music and more catchy. Artists tried to make these hooks as catchy as they could by adding different effects to the piece to make it more memorable and attractive to the ears of the listener.
[Sampling]
Sampling is where you take a literal section, 'sample', a snippet, and use it in a brand new song. This could be a unique drum fill made by a drummer which the artist 'samples' puts into their own piece of music. This is done to show off a certain audio to the public and make it more famous and well known.
The development of sampling is interesting because in not even an entire decade, sampling became illegal in most music due to artist taking musical compositional ideas from another artists song and using it as their own, most artists would also steal it and try to take ownership of the selected audio.
