The Scrovegni Chapel contains celebrated frescos by Giotto, completed around 1305. It constitutes an important masterpiece of Western Art. In 2021, the chapel was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The municipality of Padua tried to protect the chapel by undertaking its restoration several times. From 1859 it attempted public expropriation several times, but without success. In 1879, the young Giacomo Levi-Civita managed to demonstrate that the Scrovegni Chapel had been intended for public use since its foundation. The chapel was officially acquired by the municipality of Padua with a notarial deed in 1881, one year after the mandate of the City Council in the session of 10 May 1880.
