The Nitori International Scholarship, established by Akio Nitori, chairman of Japan’s Nitori furniture company, aims to promote Taiwan-Japan exchanges by supporting education. In 2005, the scholarship began offering financial aid to schools worldwide, and this year, National Taiwan University (NTU) became one of the recipients. Initially planned as a two-year program with NT$6 million in funding, Akio Nitori extended the scholarship to five years and increased the total amount to NT$18 million. Additionally, NT$3 million was allocated to NTU’s Japan Studies Center to support talent cultivation and integration. The scholarship will provide 30 NTU students annually with NT$100,000 each for projects related to Japanese culture, literature, or technology. The extended scholarship aligns with Nitori’s practice of offering five-year programs in Japan and underscores a commitment to long-term support and friendly relations. Yang hopes the funding will encourage more students to pursue Japan-related research, study abroad, and strengthen Taiwan-Japan exchanges.
