I am fully in love with theater. It is one of the most enriching, satisfying, educational, and FUN ways to celebrate humanity, art, and life itself. It is also commonly ignored, under-resourced, and swept under the rug by our school systems. There seems to be a universal belief that it is simply not important. While I might agree that professional theatrical career opportunities are limited, that doesn't mean the skills learned through theater are unnecessary. In fact, they may be necessary and incredibly difficult to teach through other means.
In my first book on education, I approached the topic like a thesis, making a general argument with facts and data for students to be given the opportunity to learn about their interests. This book is about one specific interest (theater), and is NOT approached like a thesis. It is written as a memoir of my own experiences in the crossroads of theater and education, with absolutely zero facts and data. My time in those crossroads is far from over, but my opportunity to spend 2020 writing coincided with the end of the decade where my theatrical life started, so I wrote this before I forgot all of it. In short, Lights Up. is an account of all the theater I did in the 2010's, and everything I got from it educationally.
