About Trout in the Classroom

What is Trout in the Classroom?

About the Program

Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is a nation-wide educational program that allows students and teachers to experience the life-cycle of a trout. TIC is tied to the standards for 4th and 5th grades, although it currently takes place in classrooms ranging from 3rd grade to high school throughout Nevada. Trout in the Classroom is designed to teach students about the science, art, recreation and other values of fish and aquatic life through classroom observation and hands-on activities.

How Does it Work?

We provide everything you need from the aquarium to the eggs - all for free! When your fish are ready to release, we're here to help with that too!

NDOW provides an aquarium-chiller combination (est. value, $500 per tank). You only need to sign up once for the program, but must apply each year for rainbow trout eggs (see your regional information page for application details). Training is mandatory for new teachers, optional for second year and beyond. After the training, you will need to help the students set up and operate the tanks so that they are sure the incubator (aquarium-chiller), is set up and operating properly. This is a fun way to get students involved in the process!

Eggs arrive and for the next six weeks or so, you and your students get to watch them grow and develop! We've curated activities and lessons for when your tank is in your classroom here. TIC crosses all scholastic disciplines and results in stronger understanding of math, science and social studies.  Activities include: science and art projects, journaling, measuring, math skills, and visual and language arts.

The enthusiasm of students and teachers involved in TIC is manifest in the amazing variety of activities, projects, and release fieldtrips. Teachers aren't the only one's inspiring students through TIC in the classroom; sometimes whole schools and even communities turn out for the release!

We appreciate your participation in TIC and support for Nevada's wildlife!
