Originally from Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow, a magical place to grow up, Michael Egan has been based in Kilkenny City for over ten years. His artistic journey is deeply intertwined with a personal transformation. After quitting alcohol and attending plant medicine retreats, Michael began to rediscover his authentic self. It was during this time that his creativity truly blossomed, evolving from simple journaling to sketching and eventually becoming a full-fledged obsession with art.
Michael's art serves as a powerful means of self-expression, helping him to confront and process his inner thoughts and emotions. His work is characterised by abstract expressionism, utilizing vibrant colors, acrylic paints, and Posca paint pens. Additionally, he creates sculptures, often using salvaged materials, demonstrating his innovative approach and commitment to sustainability.
The themes and inspirations in Michael's work are diverse, drawing from nature, people, thoughts, and imagination. His artistic process is deeply rooted in flow, allowing him to explore and express the myriad aspects of his inner and outer worlds.
As a self-taught artist, Michael is dedicated to furthering his education and skills. His goal is to study fine art in college and pursue a career as a full-time artist. He aspires to have his work displayed in galleries and to participate in markets and exhibitions across the country.
Michael is excited to be part of the "All Together Now" exhibition, a segment of the AKA Fringe Festival in Kilkenny City, taking place from August 8th to 18th. His work will be on display at McDonagh Junction from August 12th to 18th. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in his artistic journey, joining VTOS students to showcase his unique vision and passion.
