Attempts bridging the gap between basic and applied evolutionary ecology.

I am interested in applying the theories of evolutionary ecology to fields of practical science. In this seminar, I will introduce our ongoing research projects. The first topic is the eco-evolutionary response of agricultural weeds to the mechanical management. We are trying to understand how weed communities adapt to the management efforts and how the weed adaptation reduces the efficiency of weed management. The second topic is the application of the concept of self and non-self discrimination by plants into the crop science. By arranging the spatial structure of seedling genotype, we were able to increase the tuber production of Jerusalem artichoke. Lastly, I will introduce the joint study with ueno zoological park. Based on the sex allocation theory, we are trying to identify the factors affecting the birth sex ratio of endangered animals to improve the breeding program in zoos.
