Collective departure in feral horses

Sota Inoue (Wildlife Research Center, Kyoto University)

Animal movement is the fundamental issue in ecology and evolution. For group-living animals social interaction is one of the key driver for the movement of individual. Previous studies have often had lacks in the understanding importance of the balance between social relationships among individuals and temporary proximity. We have introduced new frame work that is combination of UAV and direct observation to understand importance of sociality and proximity in feral horses in Portugal. In this talk, I will introduce several topics in feral horses which met use of the drone technology. We found that temporary proximity, not social relationships, influence their decision making of following or not. Our data suggested that social relationships mediate their spatial positioning.
