WINTER IN KNYSNA: EASY IDEAS FOR YOUR STAY
A winter stay in Knysna works best when you keep the plans simple. The weather can change quickly, so it helps to have a few simple options ready: somewhere warm to eat, a small self-catering shop, an easy outing with children, or a quiet browse in town.
SELF-CATERING FOR A WINTER WEEKEND
If you are staying for a few nights, it is worth doing a small shop before you unpack.
Useful stops include Food Lover’s Market, SUPERSPAR, Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay for everyday groceries. Greeff’s Butchery is good for braai (BBQ) meat, 34 South is useful for deli items and an easy first supper, and île de païn is lovely for bread and pastries.
If you have already turned towards The Heads, East End KwikSpar is handy for forgotten basics such as milk, bread, ice, firelighters, snacks and coffee.
WHERE TO EAT ON A COLD DAY
Knysna has plenty of good winter dining options, from local pubs to seafood restaurants and easy family-friendly spots.
For a relaxed pub meal, try The Bell Tavern, Blend Country Restaurant & Pub or Bosun’s Arms. For seafood or a slower dinner in town, Anchorage Restaurant and Saltwater Bistro are good options. Chatters Bistro and Persello Pizzeria work well for pizza and casual family dinners.
For breakfast, brunch or lunch, Oak Leaf Restaurant and Grain Mill Organic Bistro are worth keeping in mind. It is best to book ahead on weekends, during school holidays and over the Knysna Oyster Festival.
EASY WINTER OUTINGS WITH CHILDREN
Start close to home with a walk beside the lagoon, a paddle at the water’s edge if the weather allows, or some time on the beach before breakfast. The Heads, Coney Glen and Steenbok Nature Reserve are all easy local outings.
On clear mornings, the Garden of Eden is a gentle forest boardwalk option, while Jubilee Creek suits families who want a longer forest visit. Both offer picnic facilities. For a more structured outing, Knysna Elephant Park is a good family choice.
On rainy days, the Knysna Waterfront, The Motorcycle Room, Old Nick Village near Plettenberg Bay, or the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George can work well, depending on how far you feel like driving.
WHERE TO BROWSE ON A SLOW WINTER MORNING
The Knysna Waterfront is the simplest option, with boats, coffee, jewellery, gifts, sweets, restaurants, and small shops. Thesen Harbour Town has interiors, clothing, jewellery, food stops and The Motorcycle Room nearby. Woodmill Lane is useful if you are already in town and want a short wander with a bit of Knysna history built in.
Metelerkamps is worth a stop if you like kitchens, homeware, coffee gadgets or useful gifts. The German Shop on Waterfront Drive is another good little detour for imported European food, household goods and small gifts.
BACK TO THE LAGOON
The best winter days are often simple ones: a morning out, something warm to eat, a few supplies in the fridge and enough time to come back to the lagoon before the day is over.
