TTESS Dimension 2.3 Communication. The teacher clearly and accurately communicates to support persistence, deeper learning and effective effort.
TTESS Dimension 2.4 Differentiation. The teacher differentiates instruction, aligning methods and techniques to diverse student needs.
INTASC Standard #8: Instructional Strategies. The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage learners to develop deep understanding of content areas and their connections, and to build skills to apply knowledge in meaningful ways.
The teacher communicates to students that he/she expects students to be persistent in using higher level critical thinking and effort in the classroom in order for him/her to be able to accurately and efficiently assess students and align methods and techniques to diverse student needs. The teacher in turn will use a variety of methods to develop students’ understanding of concepts so that they can make connections and use skills in meaningful ways.
The artifact I chose is a video of a mini math lesson I created and recorded. This artifact connects to Standard #8 because it uses multiple teaching strategies to help reiterate a deeper understanding of the math concept. Throughout the lesson, I modeled problem solving, guided student thinking, and encouraged effort and persistence rather than memorization. The visuals and verbal explanations allowed the student to connect with meaning and supported individual learning needs. This lesson demonstrates how varied instructional methods can promote understanding and support using mathematical skills in real life.
