Fremont History
1795 Fermin de Lasuen, a catholic spaniard father established a misson called Mission San José, which was at the site of an Ohlone village of Oroysom. Jedediah Smith (famous explorer) in 1827 was the first english speaking person there. In 1846 John C. Frémont (city of Fremont's namesake) led a military expedition to map a trail through Mission Pass for reaching the Pacific coast and to take possession of California from Mexico for the United States.
1850 saw the Gold Rush in Calfionrna, a boom town grew up around Mission San José to help support the needs of the 49ers. The first post office of the area was established there.
1956 -Five towns in the area, Irvington, Centerville, Mission San José, Niles, and Warm Springs came together to form a city. Fremont was incorporated.
1961 General Motors plant in the southern part of Fremont was the biggest employer of the city.
1980-1990 The demand in high-tech grew (linked to Silicon Valley) and employment for these type jobs did too in the 1980s to the late 1990s, Warm Springs District seen the most growth, and a caused rapid development in the city.
Fremont Dragstrip- 1959-1988 Fremont had a famous drag strip it was eventually renamed to Baylands Raceway Park.
