Charles Behre published his book titled Slate in Pennsylvania in 1933. The book was dedicated to the slate industry and was written during a critical phase in the industry when newer materials were starting to impact the industry. Behre started his research in 1923 while on the faculty of Lehigh University and continued to work on the content of the manuscript over the next 9 years. One of the most important aspects of the book was the extensive effort he made to identify the location of, and explain the form of each slate quarry, both big and small, throughout the district. Below is a map that shows the location of all of these quarries.
The map below is interactive. By holding down on the CTRL button on your keyboard and using the roller wheel on the mouse you can scroll in to any of the points. Clicking on individual points will provide the description that Charles Behre wrote about that specific quarry. To open the map in full screen mode CLICK HERE.
