Chapman, once a powerhouse of the industry, was incorporated in 1865 and was a classic company town. Populated almost entirely by Chapman Slate employees, the residents originally lived in company-owned homes and bought goods at a company-owned store.
This web page contains the records of all the quarries as they were listed in Charles Behre's Book, Slate in Pennsylvania. Each record contains the name of the quarry at the time the book was written. In addition the dates the quarry was opened as well as closed are provided if known. A link in the view will allow you to see the actual location of the quarry in Google Maps.

Whole or partial information can be typed for QUARRY NAME and DESCRIPTION . Information for the "Behre Group" is provided ONLY in a pull-down menu. YEAR OPENED and YEAR CLOSED is controlled by slider bars. Additional information is available for all records by moving the slider bar at the bottom of the table on the left side of the screen below. By clicking within any of the cells provided on the left, a description for that quarry is provided on the right as it was written by Behre.
