The images displayed in the sequence below belong to the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, and were taken by two men between the years of 1923 and 1931, a prosperous period for the slate industry. George Ashley (1866-1951 ) was named State Geologist of the Fourth Survey in 1919, and did not retire from the Pennsylvania Geological Survey until August 31, 1946, ending a 27 year career as State Geologist. Ralph W. Stone (1876-1964 ) wrote a valuable book called Building Stones of Pennsylvania published in 1932. He worked for the Pennsylvania Geological Survey under the guidance of Ashley and was acting chief Geologist of the survey twice, once in 1947 following Ashley's retirment and once again in 1953. During the years these men worked for the Geological Survey they took hundreds of photographs, many of the slate quarries and industry of both Northampton and Lehigh counties which now have become historic records of the quarries and the processes involved.
