Tips for Teaching Cursive Writing

Cursive writing is now part of the Ontario curriculum and is introduced at the grade three level. Many studies have shown that practicing cursive writing improves comprehension and retention, engages the brain on a deeper level and enhances fine motor dexterity (www.nea.org/). For some students, cursive writing offers a fresh start to master difficult letter formations and improve written output speed.

Students can use this graphic organizer as a planning tool to help prioritize tasks and complete writing assignments.

Some students will benefit from use of graph paper to organize their writing.  Use this link to access free printable options!

Click on the picture to access one book for each uppercase and lowercase letter.  There are video prompts to explain to students what to do. Students are asked to take pictures of their printing and add them to the book to allow the teacher to see their progress.
