Each week we separate our household waste into collections for General, Recyclables, Glass or Organic waste. Remembering which bin collection is which week normally requires a quick glance to check what others on the street are doing and depending on how you pay for your collection as to which bin is the expensive one.

China closed it's doors this year to imported plastic waste and Ireland has been dealt an inconvenient blow. In past years it's been reported that we exported up to 95% of our plastic waste and and in the European league table Ireland produces the most waste plastic per person than any other other (or it could simply be that we're very good at separating our waste).

The issue now is what to do with this plastic waste since it's not going in landfill sites. Every waste disposal firm is facing new costs as they discover alternative solutions.

In March The Irish Times reported that 20% of waste collection services had now started charging for recycling waste bins, adding €21 per year to the household bill.

In July 2016 'Pay by Weight Bin Charges' were supposed to become compulsory but after a fiasco where bin companies increased the household costs dramatically it was quickly suspended for 12 months.

In July 2017 the new revised rules from The Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment meant that a flat rate bin charge was no longer allowed.

Several charging options are possible.

- pay per-lift,
- pay per-kilogramme,
- pay by weight-bands,
- and weight allowance charges.
Charges by weight are not necessarily related to the cost or impact to the environment but it's a simple and convenient method for charging customers.

A quick glance at the statistics produced by www.atlas.d-waste.com highlight that we certainly do create a lot of waste from a small population.

Earlier this year we saw a flood of 'infomercials' about what we can put into household recycling bins in a bid to both get us to recycle more and for us to stop contaminating the bins with the wrong materials.

If Retailers reduced unnecessary packaging they would be helping households to reduce our waste. The process for changing our 'use it once, throw away culture' has until now been very slow to change.

World news media suggests that a total European ban on the use of plastics in drinks straws, cutlery and ear buds is now high on the political agenda. This could have been done years ago but it took the issue of waste disposal to bring it quickly to the forefront.

We're delighted to see that SuperValu have now introduced biodegradable food bags, their salad boxes are 100% recyclable plastic and we hear that in the Autumn there may be biodegradable coffee cups too!
