Not having had a clean since it's construction over a decade ago the bridge had gotten a bit unloved. With the assistance of Meath County Council Environment Department, Johnstown Tidy Towns decided it was time to improve this vital link and make it a more prominent feature.
Thousands pass it each day and it's appearance is unremarkable albeit grubby. The first stage in changing this required more than volunteers with soapy water and elbow grease.

Conscious of the river ecosystem below the solution to use only water meant that they called upon John, a local resident of Rochfort Property Maintenance, for help.

Unlike your home however there is no water supply tap at the bridge which caused a bit of a problem until Navan Rugby Club offered to help and provided the supply.

Early on Saturday 2nd June the high pressure water hose came out to scourge the grime from the railings.

Many might have pressure hoses for cleaning the car or driveway and they are very useful albeit water wasteful.

The industrial high pressure washer has even more force and made light work of removing years of built up grime. To clean deeper chemicals would be needed but the final effect of this clean was enough.

After a full morning the bridge railings gleam once more.

Now that the rails are clean the plan is to obtain several rail mounted flower boxes to line each side. Subject to funding we're hoping Johnstown Tidy Towns will have these in place within a matter of weeks.

We've asked the Council to replace the road signage where the letters have been vandalised. Also to reposition the sign which is sticking out into the path of pedestrians.
