As the debate over Obamacare ramped up in late 2009, we contacted Congresswoman Madeline Bordallo through her office website and inquired as to her position about the growing concerns of abortion funding in Obamacare.
On 9/11/09, the Congresswoman responded:
Thank you for your recent email message regarding concerns you have with the health care legislation currently being debated in Congress. I am opposed to measures which federally finance or promote abortions. My position on the issue of abortion has always been prolife. (Click here to see a copy of the email.)
On 11/5/09 she responded to an inquiry from another concerned citizen of Guam:
Thank you for your recent e-mail message with your concerns regarding abortion and the health care legislation currently being debated in Congress. I am opposed to measures which federally finance or promote abortions. My position on the issue of abortion has always been pro-life. I will keep your views in mind as Congress considers legislation regarding comprehensive health care reform in the 111th Congress. Again, thank you for e-mailing me with your concerns on this very important issue. I appreciate hearing from you and send you my best wishes. (See copy of original email here. The name of the recipient was blacked out as we do not have permission to reveal the name.)
On 3/23/10, the day Obamacare was signed into law, the Congresswoman responded to another inquiry, this time at length perhaps because the inquiry came from a Doctor:
I write in response to your e-mail message concerning the Health Care Reform package passed by the House late yesterday. H.R. 3590, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act provides no federal financing for abortions. The House, Senate, and President Obama have taken a number of steps to ensure that the Hyde Amendment, a longstanding prohibition on public funds from being used to finance abortion, will apply to H.R. 3590. If a consumer wishes to purchase an insurance policy that includes abortion coverage, they will not be allowed to use federal tax credits or subsidies to do so. Abortion may not be performed at federally financed community health centers. States and territories will have the right to exclude plans that offer abortion from being offered on their exchanges. Finally, H.R. 3590 re-affirms existing federal conscience protections; no doctor or other health care practitioner will be required to perform abortions and no government may discriminate against them for refusing to do so.
Furthermore, President Obama announced yesterday that he will sign an Executive Order to accompany the passage of H.R. 3590. The Executive Order will detail additional steps that the U.S. Government will take in order to ensure that existing law is upheld and the public's money is not used for abortions. A coalition of pro-life Democrats, led by Bart Stupak of Michigan, announced that they would ultimately support passage of H.R. 3590 with this additional consideration from President Obama.
I have always been a staunch proponent of the right to life. Thank you for your correspondence regarding this important issue.
At this point we have to ask, if all of the above is true, why were Democratic Congressman and other pro-life Democrats holding out on supporting Obamacare and only gave the bill their vote after President Obama signed an 11th hour executive order disallowing abortion funding in Obamacare? Even though Stupak and his group eventually caved, Bordallo not only does not support the pro-life Democrats in their concern, she goes to bat for Obamacare and defends it to the teeth.
The FDA's own literature notes that both Plan B and ella prevent implantation which effectively is abortion: http://www.fda.gov/birthcontrol
