If you have read my previous articles in this section, you may have now understood how stubborn I tend to be when it comes to every kind of innovation in terms of my diabetes management, as it had happened for carb counting.
Things got even crazier when the doctors started to talk about the possibility of adopting glucose monitors into my management plan: at first, I firmly refused this opportunity, not leaving even the slightest space to my diabetologist's advice.
Thankfully, my parents insisted, and in late 2017 I finally consented to a trial period with Freestyle Libre 1, the most suitable glucose monitoring option for me, according to my diabetologist. I perfectly remember that, at the time, I perceived the event of the application as a defeat in terms of pride, and I felt like that little patch on my arm was something terribly alien to me.
However, a short time passed before I had to contadict myself: I was totally wrong. I had to recognize that that tiny device was simplifying my life a lot. It was not only up to not having to perform several fingerpricks anymore: being able to actually see a true glycaemic track which could effectively allow me to appreciate the influence of even the slightest factors on my blood glucose was literally priceless. At least for me.
In fact, the public health system of Lombardy, the Italian region where I live, guaranteed to me the possibility of having access to this wonderful technology totally for free, unlike in many other Nations, or even Italian regions. The awareness of this luck was what made me decide to definitively opt for Freestyle Libre sensors.
I remember the months following this decision as extremely cheerful and happy, I truly felt like I got rid of a heavy burden. And so, a period of relative lightheartedness and looseness in terms of diabetes management began, mainly due to excessive confidence and inexperience.
Do you want to know more about this moment of my life, which indirectly allowed me to slowly move closer to my actual methods? All you have to do is to keep reading my blog.
