BG spikes. A nightmare for every diabetic. And we know extremely well when the most, in these terms, delicate moment comes: right after our meals. And if that meal is a sugary, starchy and high carb-one, it is extremely easy to mess up the deliciously flat and stable BG line we had worked hard to achieve. But no worries: TDS has a solution also for this one ;)
First and foremost, the most important thing we can do to reduce our post-meal spike is to perform an accurate prebolus: if you don't know what that is, check out this article, in which I explain to you this wonderful technique, which has saved me from those annoying spikes innumerable times.
Then, taking advantage of our knowledge oh how macros affect BG, what I've done many times to prevent my BG from skyrocketing to the stars is to eat the sugary, carb-loaded and starchy components of my meals after the ones mainly composed by fats, proteins and fiber. This is a truly underrated strategy, which I've found extremely effective: at first, being not fully confident with the combination of this tactic and prebolusing, I've even lead myself to some intense early hypos. Always act with caution, and know that this last strategy works like a "little prebolus" itself, take it into account when calculating your bolus timing!
Lastly, how can we not mention the health evergreen? What is it, you ask? Of course, walking! It may sometimes happen that, for many various reasons, the two previous techniques we have mentioned can't seem to work as expected. In those cases, a brief walk is, for what concerns my experience, the go-to treatment. In fact, you will find it immediately effective, more adjustable than a further bolus (you can simply stop walking when you notice your BG has reached satisfactory numbers, while the risk of an hypo increases with high insulin doses), and, last but not least, we always have to remember that there is nearly nothing as effective as a nice stroll both for our physical and mental health. Of course, if when you stop walking you notice your BG starts rising again, perform a correction bolus.
