BG spikes are something we have, unfortunately, to watch over almost constantly as T1Ds. They often come unexpected, they make us feel uncomfortable, thirsty and irritated: we truly hate them. And as for their treatment, the first thing we can do to face them effectively is to comprehend the dynamics which stand behind their unwanted outbreak.Â
First and foremost, how can we not talk about food? There are some kind of meals which can easily trick even the most expert diabetic, such as high-glycaemic index or fatty ones. Namely, in the first case, you will most likey observe an early rise in your BG values, while, in the other case, the spike will tend to be delayed but, sometimes, even more consistent. Furthermore, snacking and carb counting are aspects which need to be carefully managed: even the slightest amount of carb, if we don't inject any insulin at all, is able to provoke consistent spikes in some occasions. Anyway, don't worry: here you can find plenty of articles to never come unprepared in any food-related situation!
Secondly, an aspect which has to be taken into account is the role that hormones play when it comes to glucose metabolism: in fact, our body is, unluckily (in our case!), full of hyperglicemic factors which can be released at the most various times. Just to make some examples, we absolutely have to mention cortisol, the stress hormone responsible for the dawn phenomenon, not to talk about adrenaline, which gives us those annoying and sudden spikes in stressful situations.
Last but not least, we can't forget basal insulin, an element which, at least for what concerns my experience, tends to be taken too lightly most times. In fact, as this dedicated article explains in detail, a deficient dose of this fundamental medicament can cause persistent and stubborn hyperglicemias in any moment of the day, especially at night and far away from meals or rapid insulin injections. Don't sleep on it!
And with this, even this article comes to an end. However, hyper's causes are nearly innumerable, and here I've listed only some major ones: you will find many other between the articles of my website, and, of course, through your personal experience with diabetes management. Now that you have a more complete knowledge on this topic, aren't you curious about how to treat these inconveniences fast and effectively? if yes, check this article out and you won't be disappointed!
