GENERAL HISTORY
✤ · ⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻⸻ ·
Mirinus was once a village under Valencia, even before the twin heirs were born; it served as a farming region for the capital city in order to fulfill the need for cheaper food. It's settled primarily by humans and merfolk. As smaller farms developed into huge plantations, more farm workers were needed, but plantation owners refused to pay them high wages. Valencia did not interfere with the troubles of the farming region, afraid that the plantation owners would cut off supply of food until they got things their way. The abuse of farm workers continued, the Valencian humans squashing any sort of rebellion or working class improvements made by the local merfolk.
As time passed, Valencian locals became increasingly concerned with the poor living conditions in Mirinus, and began to fight for the rights of the merfolk. Greedy plantation owners quickly shut down exports and held onto their crop yeilds until Valencia agreed to stop any sort of lawmaking that might raise wages or give merfolk more control over the region. Valencian civilians continued to protest, but prices for food only climbed higher. The farming region broke off and became the kingdom of Mirinus, the governer being crowned King. Protests continued, and now discussion for military action began to take place. Unfortunately this was happening beside the incident of the twin heirs, and the king did not want any sort of war breaking out, and food shortages were getting worse.
They allowed Mirinus to have independence, and recognized them as an independent kingdom. Generations went on; progress for merfolk did not come quickly. It took nearly a hundred years for the later generations of royalty to agree to ration the massive surplus of food amongst the poor; even if they weren't housed, at least they were fed. Tension continued to grow amongst the elite and the poor, but every rebellion came to be unsuccessful.

Primary Imports: Corn, Beans, Desert/Moderate Climate Crops, Coal, Silver, Iron
Primary Exports: Seafood, Glass Products, Rice, Sugar, Tea, Tropical Climate Crops, Ships
Economic Conditions: Poor-Moderate, Low Wages, Unaffordable Housing, Huge Food Surplus/Rationed to Make Sure All are Fed
Social Conditions; Small Elite Class, Moderate-High Poverty/Low Middle Class
Mirinus is still the same as it was. Merfolk have become predominantly the working class while wealthy human Valencian descendants make up the elite class. Quite a bit of intermarrying occurred between humans and merfolk, a small middle class beginning to rise. The royal family began to concern themselves with the poor living and working conditions of the merfolk, marrying the crown princess to a merfolk aristocrat to show their dedication. Though the gesture was pretty much empty, some small progress is beginning to show. Shared housing is being built to accommodate the large homeless population, children are no longer allowed to work and are instead required to attend school, and food rations have been nearly doubled.
Despite the great amount of progress, the current royal family still struggles to work with both plantation owners and workers to create a better functioning kingdom. Conflict between races and classes still erupts, and social discrimination still frequently occurs.
Mirinus relies almost 100% on plantation farming and local fishing. Most of their crops are exported, surplus is rationed; additionally, fish and other seafood is also exported, surplus is eaten locally or rationed. Their military is fairly weak still since there is no focus on service. usually families who have served in the military prior, continue their tradition of serving for generations. Although, their navy is stronger than their army.
