Our lab has cultured corals since 2019 using aquaculture methods we learned from the fishermen of Onna Village in Okinawa, Japan. To establish our farm, we collected and propagated naturally growing corals from abalone aquaculture ponds in surrounding areas. As of 2024, our farm is home to over 4,000 individual fragments of more than 17 coral species. Using cultured corals for research, rather than sampling colonies from wild populations, facilitates environmentally friendly, safe, and systematic biological studies of corals.

The pond's large size (40 m × 25 m × 4 m in depth) creates a stable culturing environment for corals. As tides rise and fall, both natural seawater and wild marine organisms flow in and out of the pond, providing a regular supply of natural coral food.
