Coral Restoration

Coral Transplantation

Coral transplantation can be a means of protecting and restoring specific coral communities.  For example, if the existence of a coral species has been threatened by habitat reduction due to coastal development, the corals may be saved by relocating (transplanting) them to alternative sites. There are many questions that must be addressed prior to undergoing transplantation. Where and how should corals be transplanted? What environmental conditions should the transplantation site meet? How can corals be firmly fixed in place to ensure they are not swept away by waves during typhoons or rough winter seas?

To increase the success rate of coral transplantation, our laboratory is currently working to optimize transplantation techniques, as well as the selection and evaluation of transplantation sites.

Procedure

Pack corals from the coral farm

Transfer corals from boxes to baskets

Transport corals to the sea

Transport corals to the transplantation site

Transplantation Procedure

Underwater drills are used to drill holes in the seafloor and transplant corals. The corals are firmly fixed in place with adhesives.

Adjusting the amount and position of adhesive after transplantation
