Welcome to the Shikina Lab      珊瑚生物與保育實驗室   

Scleractinian corals are the keystone animals of coral reef ecosystems, creating 3D structures that support the highest level of marine biodiversity on the planet. A comprehensive understanding of coral biology is crucial for the preservation and propagation of extant corals. However, despite their importance, the biological characteristics of stony corals remain largely unknown.  

石珊瑚是珊瑚礁生態系統中關鍵的動物,牠們建造的三維結構支持地球上最豐富的海洋生物多樣性,深入瞭解珊瑚的生物學對於保護和繁衍現有的珊瑚至關重要,儘管牠們的重要性和石珊瑚的生物特性仍大部分是未知的。

The Shikina Lab uses corals cultured in our own farm to actively engage in coral biological research (asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction, etc.), development of aquaculture and transplantation techniques, and environmental education.

識名信也實驗室,我們使用珊瑚農場所培育的珊瑚,積極地進行珊瑚生物學的研究(無性生殖及有性生殖),同時致力於珊瑚水產養殖和移植技術的開發,以及推動海洋環境教育。

What We Do

1. Our lab cultivates corals for research. Why not simply collect and use wild corals for research? Collecting wild corals damages wild populations. Additionally, researchers run the risk of water accidents while diving or snorkeling to collect corals. For more details, check out our 珊瑚農場 Coral Farm page. 

我們實驗室進行珊瑚的培育是為了進行研究。為什麼我們不直接採集野生珊瑚進行研究呢?因為採集野生珊瑚會對自然珊瑚族群造成傷害。此外,潛水或浮潛收集珊瑚的過程中存在水上事故的風險。欲了解更多詳情,可參考珊瑚農場 Coral Farm

2. We have established a technique for culturing corals in small, inexpensive, and easily observable containers, such as Petri dishes, using laboratory incubators. This system enables us to carry out basic biological research with great efficiency and detail. See our publication Coral-on-a-Laboratory Dish (CLD) for more information.

最近,我們成功建立了一種在小型、低成本和易於觀察的容器中培育珊瑚的技術,例如培養皿,利用實驗室培養箱實現「實驗室培養皿培養珊瑚系統 Coral-on-a-Laboratory Dish ,簡稱CLD)。透過這個系統,我們更詳細且更有效率地進行珊瑚基礎生物學研究。

3. Coral transplantation can be a means of protecting and restoring specific coral communities. We are working to optimize transplantation techniques and increase the success rate of coral transplantation. See 保育 Coral Restoration for more.

4. We carry out ecological surveys along the coast of northeastern Taiwan as well as the algal reef ecosystems of Taoyuan. See 生態調査 Ecological Surveys for more.

5. We hope to raise public awareness of environmental protection and marine conservation. With this in mind, we are actively engaged in environmental education regarding corals and coral reefs. If interested, check out 環境教育 Environmental Education for further information.
