At The Jurist, we document law to empower people and educate the world. The Internet is our virtual classroom, allowing us to reach hundreds of thousands of people around the world. But educating our audience is only half the story. The Jurist includes a team of scholars from 04 countries around the globe. These scholars not only learn about the events that they cover, but also develop and practice research and writing skills that meet the needs of the 21st century. The Jurist scholars learn to write fluidly, accurately and concisely on potentially unfamiliar topics and under extremely short deadlines. They also learn the value of service to the community at large, as they often spend as much or more time working to further The Jurist’s mission as they do any other activity in their institution. Ultimately, when our scholars enter practice, we believe that these skills benefit their clients, colleagues and the bench. In this way, The Jurist prepares these scholars to be better lawyers and, hopefully, improves the practice of law itself.
We are guided by the values enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution of India. We want to create more legal awareness in society by acting as a trustworthy source of accurate legal news. We also intend to act as a tool to aid legal reforms by offering a space for constructive criticism of the judiciary.
TheJurist is inspired by experienced legal practitioners and technology stalwarts who come together to make the legal practice more efficient and help the practitioners stay organized. We believe that technology and law are meant for each other which helps the practitioners explore the new opportunities in the legal domain.
It’s not money. The vast majority of TheJurist’s law student are volunteers who work as an extracurricular activity. In that capacity as reporters, researchers and editors they get a unique opportunity to learn about the latest legal developments, hone their online legal research and computer skills, practice their writing under the supervision of real-time editors and cultivate an impressive ability to do all of this under the pressure of ongoing events, not a small matter in the high-energy 24/7 Internet-based legal culture they will be spending their careers in. In the process, they perform a public service.
In terms of traditional India legal education, the experience of TheJurist’s law student is conceptually similar to what they might get in a practical life, where law students traditionally learn law by freely helping others who have legal problems and questions. TheJurist’s students do not provide face-to-face legal advice, but they work online almost around-the-clock, 365 days a year, to advancing legal understanding for thousands of readers around the world.
