TRADITIONAL IBANAG POLITICAL STRUCTURE
Dakal na Barangay: The primary leader of the Ibanag community was known as the dakal na barangay. This leader was not imposed upon the people but was chosen from within the community, emphasizing the importance of kinship (karaga). The dakal na barangay was expected to possess qualities such as charisma, honesty, the ability to manage communal affairs, and intelligence to solve community problems.
This tripartite system ensured a balance of power and responsibilities, contributing to the effective governance of Ibanag communities. Below is the tripartite system.
Urayan, Ukom, Kammaranan: to be discussed on Administration tab.
Leadership among the Ibanag was not hereditary. Instead, individuals earned their positions through demonstrated competence, moral character, and the ability to lead effectively. This merit-based approach underscored the community's emphasis on integrity and capability in governance.
