Historically, the Ibanag were concentrated along the Cagayan River, but their population gradually expanded southward within the Cagayan Valley. Over time, due to internal migration, intermarriage, and trade, they influenced neighboring ethnolinguistic groups such as the Itawis, Yogad, Gaddang, and Isinay. Significant migration patterns occurred during the Spanish colonial period. The Spanish encouraged the settlement of outsiders, particularly Ilocanos, into Cagayan Valley to boost tobacco production, which led to the displacement and migration of many Ibanag to other areas. Many Ibanag communities gradually adopted Ilocano language and practices, although efforts to preserve Ibanag heritage continue.

During the Spanish colonization, the Ibanag people faced oppressive policies, including enforced tribute and forced labor. In response, leaders like Magalad and his younger brother spearheaded resistance movements in Iguig. They organized protests against these impositions and sought alliances with neighboring villages to strengthen their opposition. Although initially captured and deported to Manila, the Dominicans brought them back to Cagayan, intending to use them as models for their policy of attraction. However, the Magalads continued their resistance, leading the Spanish authorities to send Captain Chavez to suppress them forcibly.
