I-70 in Baltimore

Overview

Route Description

The routes used are: I-395, an upgraded Martin Luther King Boulevard with frontage roads, the US 40 "Freeway to Nowhere", a tunnel under Gwynns Falls, and an open cut under Leakin Park with wilderness overpasses before reaching the current east end of I-70 at a park-and-ride.

Why it is needed

When I-70 was first canceled, the I-695, I-95, and I-395 route could handle traffic from the west. Now, traffic from the south and west is forced to join to enter Baltimore. The freeway was canceled because of damage to parks and people. However, a partial depressed and tunnel segment can minimize damage to Leakin Park and the Western neighborhood of Baltimore, while using Martin Luther King Boulevard (upgraded) and the US 40 freeway to the tunnel, named after a freeway revolter who stopped the sloppy construction of the freeway without a tunnel to preserve neighborhoods and parks.
