Route Description

I-69 uses the existing (I-55/I-255 (former 240)/ MS 300), then following the Mississippi River shore past several factories, and then turning across a swamp, having an exit with US 51, and progressing north along a rail line until reaching I-269, the Tri-state Memphis Outer Orbital. (SIU-9). It will follow this rail line out of the Greater Memphis area, and then route northeast on a new bypass of Covington to just before the Hatchie River, where it will follow existing US-51, which will be upgraded to Interstate standards to near Dyersburg. (SIU-8) At Dyersburg, US 51 will be abandoned in favor of a outer western bypass to I-155. I-155/US 51 north to Troy, where it turns east and north to a bypass of Union City. It then turns east and follows US 51, and then bends north on a ramp to Purchase Parkway. (SIU-7)

Why it is needed

This route, in Tennessee and the rest of the route, is required to send trade from Mexico to Canada, and the Southern Southwest to the Great Plains.
