Route Description
The freeway enters the state on the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Helena Mississippi River Bridge, a double deck bridge, and US 49 leaves shortly at the Isle of Capri Interchange, a hybrid interchange, and travels northeast on a new alignment. (SIU 12) Then it progresses northeast through Tunica County, and uses the existing US 61 alignment with bypasses. (SIU 11). It then follows MS 713 until it reaches I-269. It reaches this and follows it until I-55. (SIU 10) It progresses north on the North South Freeway out of the state. (SIU 9)
Why it is needed
This route, in Mississippi and the rest of the route, is required to send trade from Mexico to Canada, and the Southern Southwest to the Great Plains.
