What a wonderful inspiring day full of dance and friendship! Texas Future Dance Educators is so very happy to celebrate another successful Fall Event. Students from each RRISD high school and various dance studios participated in a half day workshop on Saturday focusing on their skills as dance teachers and tips for the job search.
The day started with students getting professional headshots taken for jobs/auditions by Sweet Fix Photography & Design/Harlow Portraits. We can't wait to see them!
After giving tip & tricks on working with young children, Heather Hardesty of Kinderdance Austin/Cedar Park Dance Company/Jr Spurs Dance Team, lead the students through an activity creating preschool dance lessons. Each group was given a class scenario to plan for. They could use props from Hardesty and music loaded on iPads. Then then presented favorite parts of the lesson to the group with full lessons accessed on the event activity page of our website.
Next Heather O'Hara, of O'Hara Dance Agency, warmed the students up and then gave the students a number of strength building activities and advice for developing strong technique in their dancers. She then lead an activity for designing and teaching technique combos for the beginning, intermediate, and advanced dancer.
The session wrapped up with students working in pairs to create interview questions that an employer might ask a potential dance teacher as well as questions the dance teacher may ask they employer. Then they traded partners and lead mock interviews in front of the group. We then discussed the variety of dance teaching jobs that one might find as well expectations and details that one may look into when choosing jobs to apply for.
