Light as a feather is a project I worked on at the end of my second year as a student. It was started in febuary and then presented in june. The project was done with 4 game artist (including me) and 4 game designers. In the game you get to play a little bird aviator that got crashed onto a mysterious floating island one day. You will have to solve puzzles using the little spirits that roam the island to be able to unlock the secrets of the temple and be able to leave.
The game was done using unity and is in full 3D using 3ds max. I had many roles during this game including the rig+skinning artist, 3D artist, texture and vfx artist.
In the game there are three main zones. The first is the introduction which is linear and a way for the player to get familiar with the controls and the environment. Then there is the village which is a mini open world where numerous puzzles and secrets are hidden which the player will have to explore and solve. Lastly there is the temple that can only be unlocked if the player has 6 key fragments, and will have the 2 hardest puzzles to enable the escape.
Here is the player character, our bird. I worked a lot on the character. I helped with the concept and then the rigging, skinning and animating (done with another person too) of the character. I then placed them in unity.
I was in charge of fully making these little spirits (the villagers that used to live on the island) that the player gets to encounter and play with in the puzzle. They have different elements and weights that are used differently in the game. They also have a little idle and a summoning animation in the game.
As I mentioned, I did some vfx in this game. The game does not have many vfx as we worked mostly on lighting and modeling, but here you can see the water effects, the spirits effect and the key shard effect. All were done using particle systems in unity.
I got to make a lot of the props that we see in the environment such as plants, bridges, parts of houses and the interactive elements in the level design. The island is big and there is a lot to discover, such as little weapons and vegetables the player can carry around and plant.
