Wiht a group of 4 game designers and 3 other game artists, we made a board game called Cholula in 4 months.
In the beggining of my first year I was given my first ever semester project. We were given the task to make a dungeon crawler, 4 player, for kids board game. Tall order for a new student. The whole of the class got divided into different team each with a different theme. Our was "adventurer in the 30s" or as we called it "Indiana Jones". So here we are with CHOLULA, an adventure that takes place in an aztec inspired environment and mythology.
Our board that I fully made using photoshop. I was the artist tasked with this and it took most of my time as a beginner. All of it is painted by hand. The board was in full top down of a map that our adventurers were embarquing on. In this they would travers a forest, a volcano and then make it to the temple of Tezcatlipoca, an Aztec god, not a good one. The mission is simple. The aztec are back and they plan to use the obsidian mirror to make a giant sacrifice of the whole country to the god. You are charged with stopping this and bringing back the mirror to safety. You will start out by searching for resources and fighting some enemies to make it to the boss fight. You can choose to run away with the mirror or fight where he will chase you after a few rounds. Make it back to the start safely and you win. BUT WAIT! There's a catch. As you grab the mirror and Tezcatlipoca gets mad, the volcano erupts and blocks some your exits.
Our heroes where I was in charge of the the colour. There are four heroes. The herbologist, the mercenary, the explorer and the architect. Each have special abilities such as crafting, making potions, doing more damage or finding secret passages. They have to work together however. Each character gets a resource bag where they can place what they pick up to later use. This bag can be damaged or just full to be careful. Lastly, the heroes have their own health and damage they inflict. A player can be revived but that takes a turn, and with only 2 actions allowed per turn, this makes it harder if a player dies. To win everyone has to make it to the end.
These are only some of the enemies. For these I either did the design, the colour or both such as the jaguar. The enemies appear every turn and each have their damage and ability. They will spawn in different areas of the map, like the jaguar that only spawns in the forest, but the mummy only spawns in the temple. An ennemy moves differently each round and inflicts different things. The mummy will poison you, the jaguar will damage a lot, the Aztec will join his gorup and attack together, the snake will damage your inventory and many more. The best is to avoid them if possible as the reasources are not endless, but sometimes there is no choice.
