Storybird is a visual platform that allows students to be creative within seconds. Virtual stories are created using curated artwork from all over the world from illustrators to inspire young writers of any age group to turn their idea into story concepts. For the use of education, "storybird is a unique language arts tool" (Storybird, n.d.). The program uses standards-based writing curriculum that engages students in the writing process by using age appropriate video tutorials, writing challenges, quizzes, and much more.
Here is the process in which Storybird works within the educational setting:
Professional artwork that is created by different illustrators around the world helps to jumpstart a students creative process. This quickly draws them into the writing process and using scaffolding within their progress to build upon their work. From there, simple tools keep the students on track with the writing portions with simple feedback being presented as they keep working on their final product.
Students are sent an onboarding email that will allow them to access the site. Challenges can be issued to the students to problem solve their assignments within the writing process. Assignments can be reviewed and shared with parents. All of this information stays private within the class setting that is created for those students.
Storybird uses a standards-based curriculum that was created by educators for writing. There are hundreds of lessons, writing prompts, quizzes, worksheets, and video tutorials that can be used and displayed in the classroom.
This platform can be used with students and teachers from grades Kindergarten to Twelve grade. Many of the topics on the platform can be tailored to the specific grade being taught. While some areas do not apply to the younger grades, there is plenty of content in which the younger grades (specifically Kindergarten through Third) can access to be successful in the literacy and writing skills.
