Flippity's Random Name Generator is great for organizing students into groups, random selection or creating seating charts but I like to think outside the box and came up the the idea of story spinners. You see, I have set up a series of random name generators with different themes. Take a look at the examples below to get some ideas. If you come up with something new, I would love to hear about it. Email me at MyDigiCoach@gmail.com or tag me on Twitter, @AudraKaplan.
To make some spinners of your own, visit Flippity.net. I LOVE all of the free tools that Flippity has to offer. They are easy to use templates made with Google Sheets. Did I mention they are free!
Use the Charades spinner to figure out your category. Then spin the category spinner to find out what you will act out for your audience.
Click the black triangle to spin your spinner. Then click play to start the time. Usually players get 1-2 minutes but this is up to you. Know your audience and use the time that works for you.
Use the Pictionary Spinner to select your drawing category. Then use that category spinner below to select your word.
Books
Movies
Animals
TV Shows
Spin each of the four spinners in the first section to identify a random theme. Then have your students or participants create stories on the fly based on the results. Feel like getting them up and out of their seats, try some improv instead. Give them a spin! Have fun! Get creative! See what you come up with.
Try a compare and contrast writing assignment.
Use this tool as it was intended, to randomly selects individuals, teams, or build a seating chart.

Directions.
One person in each group of two or more, spins the wheels for the rows of shapes and colors below. Let's call this person the "Spinner."
NOTE: No one but the spinner should see the results.
The current "Spinner" uses a white board to create an object using the shapes and colors from the resulting spins.
NOTE: No one but the "Spinner" should see the drawing.
The "Spinner" communicates with the group how to draw their object by giving directions.
NOTE: Do not show your drawing or look upon anyone else's drawing until the big reveal at the end.
If time remains, try again with a new "Spinner."
NOTE: Be aware of the time limit for the activity.
Discuss with your group the following question: "What do you need in this activity to be successful?"

Directions:
Everyone sit in a seat across from a friend.
Spin the spinner for your topic.
Set the timer to 0:30.
One person shares about the topic to the person sitting across from them.
When the timer goes off, the person in the last seat, moves to the first seat and everyone else in the "outside" row moves over one seat.
Repeat steps 3-5 until everyone has a chance or the teachers tells you to stop.
