Modern New York (also known as the Modern District) is a romanticized take on present-day New York City. In order to keep the land from becoming dated, it intentionally dates itself by blending elements from the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s. This makes it the perfect playground for iconic 20th Century Studios films of the modern era! A New York where Kevin McCallister can get lost, John McClane can police the streets, and The Museum can come to life at night!
Some props are worn down or scuffed up, helping to make the land feel more authentic. Scattered about are taxis, phone booths, false Deli facades, and large Time Square style billboards to complete the modern Manhattan feeling. All the billboards advertise products that are parodies or homages to 20th Century films (things like Durden's Soap, Buzz Cola, or Edward's Landscaping Company). The whole district has a much more lived in feel compared to the other two sublands.
Parts of the district (near the Die Hard and Home Alone attractions especially) are covered in a thin dusting of snow, with the AC on full blast, to make it feel like a winter wonderland in the city! Some Christmas and Holiday decorations can be found year round, giving the area a unique vibe and a festive atmosphere.
A small Central Park themed patch of greenery uses the timeless beauty of nature to transition to the Classic District with the grand NYC Museum facade drawing guests further into the district. The fascinating architecture of the Alien attraction serves as a weenie inviting people towards the Future District, but the sleeks curve of that facade help it to transition smoothly with the more modern architecture of the MasterChef Store and other false storefronts of that side of the district.
In the small Central Park themed square in between the Home Alone attraction and the Greatest Showman attraction, the bridge under which the Pigeon Lady from Home Alone 2 lived can be found. Although instead of a tunnel, restrooms can be found there.
The second Restroom near the Masterchef store at the transition between the Modern District and the Future District is themed to the Masked Singer/Dancer. On the outside it looks like a trendy clothing store and inside are design sketches of the various costumes for guests to enjoy while they relieve themselves and freshen up. The modern design of the building and the vaguely alien creature-esque costumes serves as a smooth transition between present day and Sci-Fi.
