We are the Cometbots, a FIRST® Robotics team based in Halifax County, VA.
Our members work throughout the school year to build robots to participate in competitions and to make an impact in our community by bringing awareness to the STEM subjects.
Students learn about business, graphic design, programming, engineering, responsibility, and teamwork through the many tasks involved in building a robot for competition and maintaining the team.
Team 977- Cometbots's Mission is to build and sustain interest in Science and Technology in rural communities through Robotics and implementation of FIRST Values: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun!
Team 977- Cometbots's Vision is to inspire rural communities to celebrate science and technology and build pathways for students to explore and build upon as they become leaders in their future careers and lives.
Building Resilience. Inspiring Innovation. Leading STEM in Rural Southern Virginia.
In the heart of rural Southern Virginia, where access to advanced technology programs is limited, a group of determined students decided to change the story. Team 977 – The Cometbots was founded on a simple belief: you don’t need to be from a big city to build something extraordinary.
From a workshop in Halifax County, our students design, build, and program competitive robots for the FIRST Robotics Competition, one of the world’s most challenging STEM programs. But our mission goes far beyond competition — we are building a movement that brings science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) opportunities to every corner of our community.
Over the past few years, we’ve grown from a small team into the foundation of a regional STEM hub, connecting schools, local businesses, and families through hands-on learning and collaboration. Through our outreach — including the Community STEM Challenge and Fair, school demonstrations, and starting and mentoring FIRST LEGO League teams — we’ve inspired K–12 students to see themselves as future engineers, innovators, and leaders.
Our story is one of resilience and renewal. We’ve learned to innovate with limited resources, to lead through service, and to create partnerships that make lasting change possible. Every robot we build and every classroom we visit brings us closer to our vision — a future where Halifax County and all of Southern Virginia thrive as a hub of STEM education and opportunity.
