Kai's Lettuce Page

Cries Unheard

Scars on thy back itch-

Like the lies received,

Rope fiber is entangled,

Human Flesh

No qualms given-

No qualms received,

Home of the free,

Free from tyranny,

Free from chains,

The freeman cries-

When thus freedom-

Is infringed-

The black man sits-

Cries unheard

Destruction

Inmates bound free,

Connected in shackles,

Peleg,

Sukey,

Emma,

All Confined,

Servitude with no-

Slaves in service

A human being,

Found in chains,

Evidence of our own destruction,

Animals,

Ensuring the extinction of our own,

Species

Departmentalized,

Dehumanization,

Destruction

Spoken In Silence

The path from the road to the estate,

Is bathed with stone, concrete,

The door a wreath hanging,

Enshrined in berries,

The house that was built,

Its foundation shrouded in mystery,

A foundation that never settles,

A foundation that never sleeps,

A foundation that always toils,

A foundation a dream,

American in that,

Unspeakable Truth,

Only-

Spoken In silence

Author Statement

My intention was to try and show the contrast between the American dream and what was fueling this dream. I achieved it through poetry, the process is ever evolving. I mostly used the poem metaphorically to contrast between what was said and actually done, Along with how it carries over into the 21st century. I hope people will focus on my first poem and realise its full potential. My historical knowledge was mostly subtle. One example is the post that is chipped away, subtle but still there. Inmates bound, ties into the almshouse, known as the poorhouse back then. After that the historical stuff falls into more injustice bound history.

Kai's painting, depicting a slave ship sailing across the ocean. The red represents the lost souls and lives of the people enslaved.
