2024 marks the third year of the Huayu BEST Program running in TCNJ. Tamkang University(TKU) received 4 students who joined the summer Huayu BEST program, and 2 students who became international exchange students to TKU in the Spring semester.
Some of our students have never taken Chinese class in TCNJ before going to Taiwan, however, their growth and improvement were beyond our expectation!
Ever wonder how the chip in your smartphone is made? Our students got to go on a school day trip to visit the TSCM(Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company) Museum 50 miles away from Taipei!
Hsinchu is home to Taiwan's largest Hakka community. On the school day trip, we tried the delicious Hakka salted pork belly and rice dumplings thanks to Dr. Liu!
With a metro card in hand, the hot spring is a 40 minutes only subway ride from the heart of Taipei city. Our students visited the Thermal Valley in Beitou.

Our students planned a trip down to the south of Taiwan to meet with Dr. Liu! They were able to organize a trip and navigate the public transport on their own, which allowed them to see more of Taiwan!
Dr. Liu and visiting teacher Jasmine met with our Spring exchange student in Taipei! They spent 4 months in Taiwan, taking English-taught college course during the day, and learning Mandarin language class in the evening. They stepped out of their comfort zone, gained tremendous growth and wonderful memories.
In 2023 summer, 7 TCNJ students participated in Huayu BEST and set out on their study abroad trip to Taiwan together. For many of them, it was their first time visiting Asia. They received warm welcome from Tamkang University's Chinese Language Center who helped them accommodating to everything in Taiwan. Apart from meeting local students, they also got to meet students who are from all around the world that go to Taiwan to learn Mandarin Chinese.
Jiufen - one of the most popular mountain old town in Taiwan, is just a 1.5 hours bus ride away from Taipei city. Our students tried the tea house and the famed taro ball ice with their teacher!
Wonder what to do in Taipei after Mandarin class? Go explore the city using the Mandarin you learned that day! Getting soup dumplings, ordering boba, visiting Taipei 101, even going to a movie theater, our students did all that!
Thanks to the Hands-Together Project, our students visited a local high school, taught each other about their own cultures, and created beautiful memories with local high school students!
Young people in Taiwan love to go to KTV to blow off steam. Our students got to experience the Taiwanese KTV with their teacher!

In the summer of 2022, the first three students from TCNJ, participating in the Huayu BEST program, went to study Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan.
Immersing in Taiwanese culture, not only did they make progress in the Chinese language, but they also learned more about the culture and locals. While studying hard, they didn't forget to play hard: eating, hiking, surfing and interacting with Taiwanese people.
Taiwan has more than 268 mountain peaks over 3,000 meters (9,800 ft) above sea level. Hiking trails can be found around Taipei city, accessible via a quick subway ride.
Looking to bond with Taiwanese people? Playing Mahjong, a tradition tile-based game, can be a good way!
Our students visited Shilin Night Market, one of the most famous night markets in Taipei.
Beat the summer heat with surfing. Our students went surfing at the Wushigang beach.
