Moon festival, or the Mid-Autumn Festival is about getting together with friends and family, appreciating the moon, sharing laughs, and of course, Moon cakes! Students learned how to make moon cakes, even got to try the delicious shaved-ice!
On this cozy sunny day, students stopped by Taiwan Study Abroad table at the Global Engagement Fair and learned about Huayu BEST programs. On September 9th, 2022, TCNJ's Center for Global Engagement held a study abroad event, inviting different programs to share their information with students. During the event, the Huayu BEST program gave away mini sky lanterns with the program's information on it. The Chinese Studies students showed up in costumes to show their support.
Through the partnership between Tamkang University and the College of New Jersey on the Huayu BEST program, TCNJ students are eligible to apply to study Mandarin in Taiwan with a monthly stipend of USD 850. On October 5th, an online Zoom information session was held for the purpose of introducing the Huayu BEST program to students planning on participating in it. At the meeting, one student who had recently returned from Taiwan shared how this experience changed her life.
The TKU Huayu BEST program organized a cultural session on Taiwanese Tea. Students were introduced to different types of Taiwanese tea, mostly oolong tea, such as Baozhong tea(包種茶), Oriental Beauty (東方美人茶), High Mountain Tea (高山茶) and Dongding Oolong(凍頂烏龍茶). In addition to tea culture and history, students learned how to make tea with a Gaiwan (蓋碗) and they were divided in groups to brew and serve the tea in a traditional way. Students truely enjoyed this tea experience and asked for similar events for the future. One of the students even bought Oriental Beauty Tea online for her mother after the event.
On October 20th, TCNJ's Chinese Studies Program set up a Mandarin Table at the student's center to promote Mandarin learning and the Huayu BEST program. Students were drawn to the table by the bookmarks with the evolution of Chinese characters. They were amazed by how the characters for tree "木", wood "林", and forest "森" were created. There was a student trying to write the character for tortoise "龜" after seeing its evolution on the bookmark.
TCNJ's Chinese Studies Program cohosted a karaoke party with the Japanese Studies Program on October 26th. Students enjoyed singing songs in the langugage they had been learning while being served the most popular drink here: Boba milk tea. The songs performed include Friends(朋友), The Moon Represents My Heart (月亮代表我的心) , Jasmine Flower, Little Happiness (小幸運) and Sorry, My Chinese Is Not So Good (對不起,我的中文不好). If the judges from The Voice had been there, they would definetly have turned their chairs. Our students are just so talented!!
On Wednesday, November 30th, a Taiwanese night market, organized by the programs of Chinese Studies and the Huayu BEST, opened its doors to the campus of TCNJ. The host first introduced the origin and culture of Taiwan's night market and let students taste several street food, such as stinky tofu (臭豆腐), grass jelly pudding (仙草蜜), Taiwanese-style oden (關東煮), winter melon tea(冬瓜茶) and Taiwanese sausages (台灣香腸) as prizes for our sausage gambling game. Students receieved 5 Taiwanese paper-made $50 coins to play games at our stands, which included balloon-shooting (射氣球), ring tossing (套圈圈) and sausage gambling (十八骰仔). The winners of each game received a Taiwan's ticket and by collecting 3 tickets they could punch a hole in a mystery box (戳戳樂) to reveal their prize. Students had tremendous fun playing the games and were excited about the prizes they revealed.
On December 6th, 2022, Dr. Huan-Chao Keh, President of Tamkang University, and the school's delegation visited TCNJ. President Keh met up with Dr. Kathryn A. Foster, the College of New Jersey's President, to discuss the benefits which Huayu BEST program has brought and possible cooperation for the future.
