TCC4J Solidarity Statement
Drop the Bogus Conspiracy Charges Against LA Anti-ICE Protester Alejandro Orellana!
We salute the people of Los Angeles, who have taken to the streets to defend their neighbors against ICE, even while massive armed police and even military are deployed en masse. We denounce the violent response to protesters in Los Angeles, much like what Minneapolis experienced just five years ago, when we took to the streets to demand justice for George Floyd.
Just as we could not stay at home silent in 2020, people of conscience are compelled to resist ICE today. Our resistance then inspired folks across the country - and the world - to stand up and say that Black lives matter, that George Floyd matters, and that police could not kill us with impunity. Today, it is the resistance in LA inspiring the country to say no to ICE kidnapping our neighbors, no human being is illegal!
The U.S attorney is charging Alejandro Orellana with conspiracy to commit civil disorder and with aiding and abetting civil disorder, based on their claim that he drove a pickup truck carrying PPE (personal protective equipment) including face shields to distribute to protesters.
During the 2020 uprising in Minneapolis, at least two people lost an eye to police firing on protesters, one of them later lost her life due to the injury. When we are in the streets to protest the actions of our government, we have a duty to keep each other safe. We say Alejandro has done nothing wrong, we demand that the charges against him be dropped immediately!
Alejandro is an immigrants rights activist and leader in the Chicano-led Centro Community Service Organization of East Los Angeles (Centro CSO). His organizing against ICE raids and the Trump administration have placed him in the government’s crosshairs.
Protesting is not a crime!
Protesters in LA have faced tear gas, rubber bullets, beatings, kidnappings, and more. Now heroes like Alejandro face bogus federal charges and potential prison time. It is people like Alejandro, not the Trump administration and his agents, who are on the right side of history. His activism and resistance to Trump and ICE serves as a model for what all people should be doing at this time. We stand with him.
From its role in the killing and imprisonment of Black Panthers and the American Indian Movement to its current role targeting activists organizing against racist ICE raids and deportations in predominantly Chicano and Latino neighborhoods, the FBI remains a vicious weapon of repression deployed against the movements of oppressed peoples. Now is the time to stand in unconditional solidarity with Orellana, the people of Los Angeles, and with all immigrant communities under attack. Anything less than solidarity with Orellana and immigrant and Chicano communities would be a victory for the enemy.
We will join the local action June 27 to protest Orellana’s charges, along with those of local activist Isavela López. We urge everyone to call U.S. Attorney Bilal Essayli at 213-894-2400 and demand he drop the charges against Orellana.
Drop the Charges on Alejandro Orellana Now!
Stop the “Deportations” and ICE Raids!
