This project was for us to look into different resources that tell us about the impact social media has on ourself and our surroundings.
After taking the "Am I ADDICTED to social media?" quiz, the results tell me that I am not addicted. I find this to be true about myself. It is very unlikely to find me distracted by social media or "needing" to check it. I am someone who checks it when I'm bored. However, when I'm at school, work, or doing homework, I am able to put it on do no disturb and not check for hours depending on the day.

What I found interesting on Pew Research Center out was that the article said "Hispanic Americans (46%) are far more likely to say they use WhatsApp than Black (23%) or White Americans (16%)" (Atske, 2023). I chose this specific statistic because I don't personally know many people that use this app. Furthermore, I use this app for out of country friends and family serving in the military. I have also only heard of other people using it for the same reason. Since I use this app for specific distance reasons, I would like to know what purpose it serves Hispanics since they are more inclined to use the app?
When I think of social media and what it is doing to society, it's typically negative. I believe that since there isn't much of a filter on social media, it is very easy to say anything on your mind while also invading someone's feelings. I believe that even though society is always evloving and being more inclusive. There will always be someone or something we want to compete ourself to. This effect is more prevalent in younger age groups rather than older. There was a study that showed that females were also more effected than men. The excessive use of social media and exposure to negative thoughts has been linked to the incline in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. (Karim et al., 2020)
The biggest lesson I learned through this week's module was that social media is such a subconscious thought. While I was taking the social media quiz, there were questions that I didn't know how to answer because sometimes I use snapchat as my main form of communication for friends versus text messages. Meaning I don't always feel as though my snapchat usage isn't to post to the public or interact with society. There are things that we subconsciously do on social media and things that happen behind the scenes that affect others more than just yourself.
