The history of The First Church of Chiangmai

The Rev. Danial McGilvary, DD. And his family arrived in Chiang Mai and introduced Christianity in 1867 AD. Later, the Rev. Jonathan and his family came to join them, and the first Presbyterian Church of Chiang Mai was established on 18th April on the eastern bank of Ping River. In 1887 AD, a church was built in western architectural style, the first one of its kind in Chiang Mai. Later, Fhaner Memorial School and Christian school were established respectively. In 1968, a new chapel was built on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church in Chiang Mai.

Jonathan and his family came to join them, and the first Presbyterian Church of Chiang Mai was established on 18th April on the eastern bank of Ping River. In 1887 AD, a church was built in western architectural style, the first one of its kind in Chiang Mai. Later, Fhaner Memorial School and Christian school were established respectively. In 1968, a new chapel was built on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church in Chiang Mai.

Later in 1887 the missionary builds the first church in Chiang Mai for worship God and continue their missions.

In 1957, Minister Bunyer Natanate, a Pastor of the first Church Mai church was traveled to America. So the faculty of the First Chiang Mai church appointed Minister Pisnu Auntapit to the position of the pastors. During that time, he saw a number of the tables and chairs at the church were available and they were only used for study Saree on Sunday. Moreover, pavilion was empty, so he started an idea of open a school. However, after consulting with the faculty of women church, they realized of the problems for opening school, so instead, they open a nursery inside the church. After received the support to open the nursery, and by using the pavilion Jantra and larp phet. The nursery was in the custody of the president and Mrs. Taowan Worasri was the first nursery teacher. Later Mrs. Laao Singnate opened a nursery at her home which close to the church then she brought some children to the church’s nursery and helped look after children.

In 1961, the first group of children were at the age of their first grade, some of the children’s parent did not want to move them to different schools because it was difficult to find a school in early 1962, the faculty of pastors of the first Chiang Mai church form a committee to establish a school, which have Dr. Jinda Singnate, Mrs. Somsong Kreawwannarate and Professor Jay Jean Johnson. They hold the meeting for opening the school on March 7, 1962 At the nursing home of McCormick Hospital.


In 1962, the foundation of Church of Christ in Thailand gave Mrs. Saleang Ch.Signate as a representative to receive the permission from department of education.


The school was granted to teach in st. th grade in May 16, 1962. According to the license number 2/2506 on May 16. BE 2505, which have Mr. Tuwan Beniwan is the manager and Mrs. Somsong Kreawwanarat is the head teacher. By using the area of the first Chiang Mai Christian Church and the Frieder pavilion to be the first school building for the member of the first church. This had minimized the area for praying on Sundays, the committee of the first Chiang Mai church has approved to build a new church at the first Chiang Mai Church (present) and have a ceremony of the opening of the church on December 11, 1968. For the original Chiang Mai church is used for teaching moral to students and church’s mission also for meeting room of the Chiang Mai Christian School. It is still symbol of the school until present day.
